The story of the Ocean Course at Hokuala is one of evolution and enduring excellence. Originally conceived as the Kiele Course at Kauai Lagoons Golf Club, the course first opened its fairways in 1988, a visionary design by the legendary Jack Nicklaus. At its inception, the Kiele Course quickly garnered acclaim for its dramatic oceanfront holes and strategic bunkering, setting a new standard for resort golf in Hawaii. Nicklaus's design philosophy was evident from the start: to create a course that respects the natural landscape while offering a formidable test of golf.
Over the decades, the course underwent significant transformations and enhancements. In 2011, under new ownership and with a renewed commitment to its legacy, the course was reimagined and rebranded as the Ocean Course at Hokuala. While retaining the core brilliance of Nicklaus's original layout, particularly the iconic oceanfront stretch, the renovation focused on modernizing the infrastructure, enhancing playability, and ensuring the course continued to meet the highest standards of championship golf. This revitalization cemented its status as a premier destination for Kauai golf. The heritage of the Golden Bear's design, combined with continuous dedication to pristine conditioning, ensures that the Ocean Course at Hokuala remains a jewel among Hawaii's golf offerings, a place where history and modern luxury converge on the breathtaking Lihue coastline.
Jack Nicklaus's design philosophy shines brilliantly throughout the Ocean Course at Hokuala, offering a strategic and visually stunning journey across Kauai's diverse landscape. The layout is a masterful blend of inland tropical splendor and dramatic oceanfront drama, creating a truly unique 18-hole experience. Nicklaus, known for his demanding yet fair designs, utilized the natural contours of the land to craft a course that requires thoughtful shot placement, strategic decision-making, and often, a mastery of the elements.
The course opens with a series of holes that wind through lush, tropical vegetation, characterized by dense forests, tranquil lagoons, and subtle elevation changes. These early holes provide a warm-up, demanding accuracy off the tee and precise iron play to well-guarded greens. Water hazards are strategically placed, often coming into play on approach shots or as lateral challenges, adding an extra layer of complexity. As you progress, the course gradually reveals its most spectacular features, culminating in its famous oceanfront stretch.
Nicklaus's genius is particularly evident in how he transitions players from the inland holes to the dramatic coastal cliffs. The design seamlessly integrates the natural environment, using the trade winds, ocean breezes, and the dramatic coastline as integral parts of the challenge. Large, undulating greens, often protected by deep bunkers, demand a deft touch with the putter. The fairways are generous in some areas, inviting aggressive drives, but quickly narrow in others, forcing a more conservative, strategic approach. This dynamic interplay between risk and reward is a hallmark of the Ocean Course at Hokuala, ensuring that no two rounds ever feel exactly the same.
The Ocean Course at Hokuala is renowned for its magnificent stretch of oceanfront holes, a truly iconic feature that distinguishes it from any other golf course in Hawaii. While the entire course offers stunning views, holes 13 through 16 are particularly legendary, providing an unforgettable experience that blends exhilarating golf with unparalleled natural beauty.
As golfers approach the 13th tee, the course dramatically opens up to the Pacific Ocean, marking the beginning of the longest continuous stretch of oceanfront holes in Hawaii. This par-4 often plays into the prevailing trade winds, demanding a powerful and accurate drive to a generous fairway that hugs the coastline. The approach shot to a green perched precariously close to the ocean's edge is nothing short of breathtaking. The sound of crashing waves, the salty air, and the panoramic views create an atmosphere that is both awe-inspiring and slightly intimidating. Strategic bunkering guards the green, making precision paramount.
Following the dramatic 13th, the 14th hole continues the cliffside journey. This par-3 is a true postcard moment, requiring a precise tee shot over a chasm to a green framed by the vast expanse of the Pacific. Depending on the wind direction and strength, club selection can vary wildly, making this hole a true test of nerve and skill. The views from the tee box are simply spectacular, offering an unobstructed panorama of the Kauai coastline stretching into the distance. It's a hole where golfers often pause to simply soak in the majesty of their surroundings before attempting a shot that demands full concentration.
The 15th hole, a challenging par-4, continues the exhilarating dance with the ocean. The fairway runs parallel to the coastline, with the Pacific Ocean serving as a constant, mesmerizing backdrop and a formidable hazard. Drives must be carefully placed to avoid straying too far left towards the cliffs or too far right into the lush rough. The approach shot to the green is often exposed to the full force of the trade winds, requiring golfers to account for drift and trajectory. This hole exemplifies Nicklaus's ability to integrate the natural environment into a strategic challenge, making every shot a memorable one.
Concluding the legendary oceanfront stretch, the 16th hole, typically a par-5, provides a grand finale to the coastal experience. This sweeping hole offers multiple strategic options, with the ocean continuing to influence play. Golfers can choose to challenge the coastline with an aggressive line off the tee, or play safer towards the inland side of the fairway. The hole often features a dramatic dogleg, requiring careful club selection and placement for the second shot. The green, often well-bunkered, offers one last opportunity to savor the stunning ocean views before the course turns back inland towards the finishing holes. This entire stretch from 13 to 16 is a highlight of any Kauai golf vacation, cementing the Ocean Course at Hokuala's reputation as a world-class destination.
The Ocean Course at Hokuala is widely regarded as an advanced-level golf course, a reputation well-earned through its demanding layout, strategic design, and the ever-present influence of Kauai's natural elements. Golfers considering a round here should be prepared for a significant test of their skills, but one that is ultimately rewarding.
Perhaps the most significant factor influencing play at the Ocean Course is the prevailing Hawaiian trade winds. These consistent breezes, often picking up strength in the afternoon, can dramatically alter club selection, shot trajectory, and strategy, particularly on the exposed oceanfront holes. A seemingly benign par-3 can become a monster with a strong headwind, while a downwind par-5 might tempt a golfer to go for the green in two. Mastering the wind is crucial for scoring well here.
Jack Nicklaus's design ensures that every shot demands thoughtful consideration. Fairways, while often generous, are strategically contoured and guarded by deep, penal bunkers. Water hazards, in the form of lagoons and the vast Pacific Ocean, come into play on numerous holes, adding both beauty and challenge. The greens are typically large, undulating, and can be quite fast, requiring a delicate touch and excellent reading skills. Pin positions can significantly impact the difficulty of approach shots and putts.
Despite its challenging nature, the Ocean Course at Hokuala maintains immaculate playing conditions year-round, a hallmark of a premier resort golf experience. The fairways are lush, the greens are smooth and true, and the bunkers are meticulously maintained. The tropical climate of Kauai, while contributing to the course's vibrant greenery, also means the occasional rain shower, which can soften conditions but typically doesn't deter play for long. The superb conditioning allows golfers to fully appreciate Nicklaus's design without the added frustration of poorly maintained turf.
For golfers who embrace a challenge and appreciate a course that demands creativity and precision, the Ocean Course at Hokuala offers an exhilarating and deeply satisfying experience. It's a course that will test every club in your bag and every facet of your game, all while immersing you in the breathtaking beauty of Kauai.
The Ocean Course at Hokuala distinguishes itself from other Hawaii golf courses through a confluence of extraordinary features, cementing its status as a truly unique and memorable destination for golf enthusiasts.
Undoubtedly, the most defining and unique characteristic of the Ocean Course at Hokuala is its unparalleled stretch of oceanfront holes. With roughly four miles of Pacific coastline incorporated into the layout, particularly the continuous run of holes 13 through 16, no other course in Hawaii offers such an extended, dramatic, and uninterrupted encounter with the ocean. This feature alone provides an almost cinematic golfing experience, where every shot is accompanied by the roar of the waves, the scent of the sea, and panoramic vistas that stretch to the horizon. It's an immersive coastal journey that is simply unmatched.

All I can say is… wow. First time golfing in Kauai and this is the way to do it. Tee time at 7:45, we got there early enough for a WARM welcome including a complimentary golf towel before loosening up on the range. Starter “Uncle Ricky” hooked us up with a couple of cold waters and we had a no stress start to our round starting on the back 9. Phenomenal views, challenging tee boxes, and just honestly complete relaxation while having the most fun possible on a golf course. Felt like we were the only 2 golfers out there (great spacing of tee times). Absolutely will go back if I get the chance. I miss it already!
One of the best courses I’ve played yet. Absolutely pristine conditions from tee box to green. Fairways were spectacular, upkeep of the course is unmatched. Highly recommend playing this course if ever on the Island of Kaua’i.
This was one of my favorite golf experiences. The course was as beautiful as it gets, I don’t think I’ve ever played more amazing finishing holes. The weather really cooperated and there was sunshine and no wind to speak of. We were the first tee time out and finished the round in 3 HOURS which is unheard of typically on a resort course. I can’t wait to come back and visit once the new clubhouse is finished. Ranked as one of the nicest courses in Hawaii it’s easy to see why. What a great experience. Shoutout to Tom and the whole staff who made it a day to remember. *They had just sanded the greens after a big storm getting ready for a college tournament so don’t mind that in the photos. Greens played a little slow but no impact to the round overall
