Ko Olina Golf Club: Oahu's Hidden Gem on the Leeward Coast

When most golfers think of Oahu, they picture the North Shore's surf breaks or Waikiki's skyline. But the island's best-kept golf secret sits on the dry, sunny leeward coast — Ko Olina Golf Club.

The Course

Designed by Ted Robinson and opened in 1990, Ko Olina stretches across 6,867 yards of immaculate Bermuda grass fairways framed by volcanic rock, cascading waterfalls, and shimmering lagoons. Robinson was known as the "King of Water," and Ko Olina is his masterpiece — water features appear on 12 of 18 holes without ever feeling gimmicky.

Signature Holes

Hole 12 (Par 3, 178 yards): The crown jewel. Your tee shot carries over a massive waterfall cascading into a lagoon that guards the front of the green. It's one of the most photographed holes in Hawaii — and one of the most intimidating.

Hole 18 (Par 4, 396 yards): A dramatic closer that doglegs left around a lake. The approach shot plays slightly uphill to an elevated green with the Ko Olina resort as your backdrop. Birdie here and you'll remember it forever.

Playing Conditions

Ko Olina sits in one of Oahu's driest zones, averaging less than 17 inches of rain per year. That means firm, fast fairways and greens that roll true. The trade winds are lighter here than on the windward side, making it a great option for golfers who want to focus on their game without battling 20-mph gusts.

Green Fees & Tips

  • Resort guests: $219–$259 depending on season
  • Twilight rates: Available after 1:00 PM at reduced pricing
  • Best time to play: Early morning for cooler temperatures and empty fairways
  • Don't miss: The post-round poke bowl at the clubhouse grill

Getting There

Ko Olina is a 30-minute drive from Honolulu International Airport and about 45 minutes from Waikiki. The resort area also features four man-made lagoons, Disney's Aulani Resort, and several dining options — making it easy to turn your golf day into a full leeward coast experience.

Ko Olina Golf Club proves that Oahu's golf scene extends far beyond the tourist corridor. If you're visiting the island and want a round that combines world-class design with genuine Hawaiian beauty, this is your course.
