Kapalua Plantation Course Completes Major Renovation

The Plantation Course at Kapalua on Maui — home to the PGA Tour's annual Tournament of Champions (now The Sentry) — has completed a comprehensive renovation that promises to elevate one of Hawaii's most iconic golf experiences.

What Changed

The renovation, overseen by original co-designer Bill Coore, focused on several key areas:

New Greens

All 18 greens have been resurfaced with TifEagle Bermuda grass, replacing the aging Tifdwarf variety. TifEagle provides a smoother, faster putting surface that better handles Maui's climate and the heavy foot traffic from resort play and tournament conditions.

Improved Drainage

Hawaii's west Maui mountains can deliver sudden, heavy rainfall. The renovation included a complete overhaul of the course's drainage system, ensuring the Plantation Course can handle tropical downpours without extended closures.

Bunker Restoration

Every bunker on the course has been rebuilt with new sand and improved drainage. The renovation maintained the dramatic, deep-faced bunker style that makes the Plantation Course such a visual and strategic challenge.

Enhanced Tee Boxes

New tee complexes offer more flexibility for different skill levels, making the course more accessible to resort guests while maintaining the championship challenge that PGA Tour pros face each January.

What It Means for Visitors

The Plantation Course has always been a bucket-list round in Hawaii, and the renovation only raises the bar. Expect:

  • Faster, truer greens that reward precise approach shots
  • Better course conditions year-round, even during Maui's wetter months
  • More playable options from forward tees for recreational golfers

Green fees remain in the premium range ($300+ for non-resort guests), but the experience now matches the price tag more than ever.

The Sentry Connection

The PGA Tour's The Sentry tournament, held each January, brings the previous season's tournament winners to Kapalua. The renovated course is expected to produce lower scores thanks to the improved putting surfaces, though the Plantation's dramatic elevation changes and trade wind exposure will continue to test the world's best.
